Decaying Purity: Phases of dimensional torture

31/08/11  ||  The Duff

So Decaying Purity start pimping out their new music on SMN forums, and my eyes pick up artwork by the same dude who did Defeated Sanity’s “Chapters of Repugnance” among a shit-tonne others; the mind wanders at the potential (basically orgasms, but to the common observer it simply looks like a very runny nose). Hoping that Toshihiro Egawa is the brutal death metal equivalent of Par Olofsson to technical death metal, and in anticipation for a June release of their latest effort, the band too obscure for anybody to give a shit about uploading a torrent months in advance, I decide to check up on Turkey’s answer to Disgorge with the re-issue of their debut album (including tacked on tracks from their latest of demos).

Decaying Purity, surprise motherfuckers, like Suffocation; but really, it is actually surprising in the sense most brutal death metal bands identify themselves most with Deeds of Flesh, Disgorge and Devourment. On “Phases of Dimensional Torture”, these Turkish brutal death metallers agree with little of that but instead follow in the footsteps of “Effigy”-era Suffo and all of Cannibal Corpse’s catalogue (check “Drowning by Sense of Perversion” for clearest CC worship, Paul Mazurkiewicz’s half-hearted blasts replicated to a maximum). This means that, with arrangements that are very linear (relatively speaking for the sub-genre), you’re not going to get anything near groundbreaking or entirely cerebral. What you will get is heavy, catchy, well executed and pretty much not bad.

Okay, now getting to the beef, despite “Phases of Dimensional Torture” not being the most difficult of albums to understand, even without the demo it comes in at a whopping twelve tracks; not many of these span beyond three minutes, but you won’t want to dissociate between them the music not being the most original, so simply pick out choice riffs that agree with you the most and be ready for a short lifespan. The production isn’t all too grand, siding more with the early Cannibal Corpse style of things and thusly the more tech Suffo inspired riffs lose out by not having the most differentiable of notes. One spin through of this band’s latest “The Existence of Infinite Agony” is the sign of a band that has risen high and clear of its flaws found on “Phases…”, this record here more an effort showing a band of promise in need of picking its feet up.

With soundclips chiefly taken from “Terminator 2”, the atomic blast-scene and one of many conversations on morality between Ah-nold and the one with the sexy lips (guess who? – that’s right! Earl-fucking-Boen!), there’s no doubt the band itself has an understanding of the cliché qualities to their music. This doesn’t exhonerate them unfortunately, and so with “Phases of Dimensional Torture” we’re left with something entertaining but really only worth the attention of a select few rabidly devoted brutal death metal fans.
